VICTORY ON CLIMATE CHANGE

I am really pleased to report that Totton & Eling Town Council have at last accepted the need to start tackling climate change as an emergency.

The Liberal Democrat Town Councillors, led by Cllr Caroline Rackham, have been pushing the case for the Town Council to adopt the threat of climate change as a priority issue, for some months.

Matters came to a head last night at the full Council meeting, with some Conservative Councillors reluctant to join hundreds of other authorities that have already adopted a motion that makes it clear climate change is an emergency and requires a suitable response.

After some discussion with some Councillors expressing the view that they didn't know enough about the issue, or feeling the Council had already done enough by fitting solar panels, the mood seemed to change when it was pointed out, by Councillor Amy Hardingson, that Totton will be amongst the first towns in the country to suffer from sea levels rising, at Eling.

Councillor David Harrison told members that the issue was not complicated and proposed that the Council adopts a motion that "Recognises the immediate threat of climate change and the need to treat it as an emergency". This was seconded by the acting Chairman of the Council and supported by all members.

Cllr. Harrison says "All credit to Cllr. Rackham for pushing this issue and for the decision taken last night. It means that the authority has accepted that the need to tackle climate change is the number one priority. Clearly, the Council will have to look at a whole range of services and facilities it provides and put together action plans that not only bring about a greener Council but encourages others to follow suit".

Secure cycle parking is vital to getting more people on bikes

NEEDED IN TOTTON I very much agree with the need to provide secure cycle parking facilities. In particular, Totton train station has one of the worst records in the UK for cycle thefts. It's a huge barrier to anyone thinking of leaving an expensive bike there, whilst taking the train. On the planned list of…
