WISH IT WAS JUST A NEW FOREST PROBLEM
Anybody who watched the news in the last fortnight will know that recreational pressures isn't something unique to the New Forest. We have seen serious issues, at Testwood Lakes, at Durdle Door, at Bournemouth beach, Lepe Country Park, Forests in Dorset and even Studland beach.
It's always been rather easier to identify the problem and call for action. However, it's a great more difficult to take action with limited resources and lack of powers to do something.
I think that one of the consequences of lock down has been a very strong opposite reaction, with people determined to go out and not always behaving in a sensible fashion. I hope it will quickly settle down. As I write this, there also long queues at IKEA Stores and even fast food takeaways.
The New Forest National Park has been working on an updated recreational management plan for a long time now, involving discussion and agreement with scores of partner organisations.
I take the view that it is only possible to do so much in terms of trying to manage recreation. Whatever you have in place, whatever resources you throw at the issue, it still relies on people to care and respect the area and the people here. This is often lacking. It is one of the hardest issues to tackle, but as a member of the National Park Authority, I will continue to steer things in the right direction.
