TOTTON TORIES TRY AND FAIL TO HAVE IT BOTH WAYS

A fascinating study in tribal behaviour at the Annual General meeting on Totton & Eling Town Council tonight.

The Conservatives hold 12 seats and the Liberal Democrats hold eight seats. Each year, the Council is required to elect Chair and Vice Chair of the Council, as well as all the Committees.

Most reasonable people would assume that the posts would be shared out fairly, in proportion to the seats held.

However, the Tory Councillors, who almost every meeting say "We don't want the Council to be party political" and "We must work together as a team", have taken all of the places, including removal of Cllr Caroline Rackham (who Chaired the Planning Committee).

The problem of choosing people for key positions based on political party rather than ability became more acute when it came to appointing representatives to outside bodies, with Councillors who have shown little commitment and have zero knowledge being chosen over others who work hard and even have professional experience.

I do feel sorry for Cllr Neville Penman, taking over as Chairman of the Town Council. He genuinely wants the Council to work together (as he does with me), but being in the party that plays hardball and puts the interests of the Conservative party over the interests of a Town Council where all members feel equally valued and talents are best employed, left a very sour taste.

Experience has shown me that if you force people into "opposition mode", they start to act as exactly that. It's just one of the more stark failings of the Conservatives when they get into power.

CLIMATE CHANGE EMERGENCY I know a lot of people are very concerned about climate change and what local politicians are doing about it. To be entirely honest, the situation in Hampshire is a bit mixed. Some politicians understand the seriousness of the problem and are acting upon it, whilst others are making the right noises,…

MY WEATHER WARNING I don't normally issue personal weather warnings, but I just spotted this anvil shaped cloud approaching Totton. An anvil cloud is made of ice particles; these frozen particles form in the highest levels of thunderstorms or cumulonimbus clouds. The cool shape that you see with the flat top is due to rising…

RAILWAY QUESTION It's possible that if you live in Totton, Marchwood or further down the Waterside, you may get a call from a survey company asking if you would use a passenger service down the Waterside line. Two important factors are frequency of service and cost. It looks most likely that it will be a…

TOTTON CAR PARKING CHARGES Well that's it… the long running agreement that lasted over two decades, providing free car parking in Council run car parks in Totton Town Centre seems to be no more. At a meeting of the Policy & Resources Committee of the Town Council tonight, I was amused to hear local Conservative…

BAT ALERT I have had contact from a member of Hampshire Bat Care group who informs me that there seems to be bats roosting in the former Testwood Club building, Salisbury Road, Totton. The building has been purchased by New Forest District Council who, I understand, plan to demolish the building and develop housing on…
