TORY CHRISTMAS PRESENT
Another depressing meeting of the Totton & Eling Town Council.
Tonight, despite the protests of myself and other Liberal Democrat Councillors, the Conservatives have colluded in pushing through car parking charges in town centre car parks, with a £10 overstay fee for anyone guilty of parking too long.
It's a combination of the Conservatives at District and the Town that means the long standing policy of not charging for car parking comes to an end.
A complete lack of detail about whether the parking clocks will be valid in Town Council car parks, how the car parks will be monitored, what they will do with complaints from residents and customers who are used to free parking.
I predict all sorts of associated issues. I told members that we will quickly see problems with cars being parked in nearby residential roads and a negative impact on local businesses, particularly the retail sector which is already struggling as a result of the virus restrictions.
Significantly, the Conservatives have done nothing at all to reach out to local businesses and ask them what they think of the proposed changes.
Oh well, at least we were all wished a Happy Christmas by the Chairman of the Council at conclusion of the meeting.

LOVE THESE RAILINGS One of the most attractive and distinctive features of Eling that you can still find are these beautiful metal railings. Traffic hotspot to get road bridge built over level crossing
BRIDGE TO REPLACE CROSSING I am grateful to Councillor Dave Hills for flagging this up via the "Waterside Community Railway" Facebook Page. A lot of people will be asking, why cannot Totton have a bridge? It shows that it can be done, if the political will is there. Depending on where the bridge is located,…

REDUCTION IN COUNCILLOR NUMBERS LEADS TO STRANGE BOUNDARIES The Electoral Commission has published a report detailing recommendations following the decision to reduce the number of Councillors from 60 to 48 on New Forest District Council. This is a piece of work that I initiated some years ago. I always felt that there were simply more…

NEW COUNTRY PARK I am unashamedly sharing my vision for something positive that we could see happen here, if only there is sufficient political will to make it so. At this time, we all need something positive to focus on, so here goes…. I think we should create "Win Win" Country Park, located on coastal…
