THOUGHTS ON TOTTON

"It is what it is"

Let me start by assuring you this is only a bit of a fun suggestion. I have no power or intention of making it happen, but the thought amuses me and may do the same for you.

New York has the motto "The City that Never Sleeps", Florida is known as "The Sunshine State".

The New Forest District Council has the motto "Old but ever new".

I was thinking about a suitable motto for my home Town of Totton. At present, there is no official motto. It's an unfortunate fact that Totton rhymes with Rotten, so some people "cleverly" put the two words together and call it Rotten Totton, whenever something happens in the community that disappoints.

When at Winchester, for meetings of Hampshire County Council, I have often been tempted to use the words "Forgotten Totton", especially when you compare investment in our town with virtually every other town in Hampshire.

Of course, the people who live here know that it has many fantastic features and it is a great place to live. We may not have many things that visitors can admire and I wish it was possible to start again when it comes to the town centre.

Anyway, combining an amusing quip with a healthy dose of realism and classic British understatement, my suggestion is that on all the entrances to the Town, under the sign that says "Welcome to Totton Eling", we should add the motto "It is, What it is"…..

It might just get us noticed by the bosses at Hampshire…..

BUTTERFLY COUNT…

BUTTERFLY COUNT The Annual Butterfly Count received a lot of publicity this year, which is good, along with the number of people who took part in the exercise. The overall headline seems to be a reduction in most species of butterflies but (as always) the detail is much more important. Having everybody count at one…

FERAL BIRDS…

FERAL BIRDS There has been a large family of Feral pigeons that live in and around the bridges at Redbridge for as long as I can remember. They often like to sunbathe on the roof of nearby buildings. Interbreeding means that there are also quite a lot of interesting colour variations.

MOST AUTHORITARIAN GOVERNMENT EVER?…

MOST AUTHORITARIAN GOVERNMENT EVER? I align myself with the growing number of MP's that are calling for Parliament to have much more of a say before more restrictions are being imposed upon us by Boris and Cummings. If it seems like some of the recent decisions are "off the wall", it is what happens when…

NEW FOREST SHOULD BE RUN BY NEW FOREST RESIDENTS…

NEW FOREST SHOULD BE RUN BY NEW FOREST RESIDENTS There has been a very strong reaction to the news that Government and local Conservative Councillors are talking up plans for a new "Super Council" to replace New Forest District Council. It's not clear yet whether the government plans will lead to an enhanced Hampshire County…

Thank you to the Volunteers at Ordnance Survey for painting the Hangar Farm building. I met with Minstead Trust and other Councillors last week to discuss the future of the building and service it provides for the community. There is a real joint determination to keep it open, although it is currently making almost no…
