The Big Switch Off
The next item being considered by Tories at Hampshire County Council, who have recently announced an intention to save a further £80 million, is street lighting.
It is possible to dim lights or even switch them off completely between (say) the hours of midnight and 5am.
Will this lead to more road accidents?
Will it very likely increase crime and anti-social behaviour?
As always, the County Council are legally obliged to consult with the public before going ahead and switching off the lights.
The consultation is live on the HCC website until the 5th August.
I would urge everyone to tell them what you think.
I would also be interested in hearing the views of my Facebook followers.
Do you think the benefits of darker skies and energy saving outweigh the problems I have suggested?

I must admit to a slight sinking feeling whenever the thick file of papers known as the Agenda and reports for the next District Council planning committee fall on my doormat.
The District Council formally decided to adopt new powers that will enable them to levy fines at the registered owners of vehicles, if any litter is thrown out, whether by the driver or a passenger.
