A most unexpected surprise this evening, as I visited my (slightly neglected) vegetable beds at the Salmon Leap allotment.
I found Mr Fox, fast asleep, amongst my cabbages.
I got withinabout six feet of him. He woke up, looked me up and down as if to say “I thought you were out canvassing for the elections” and sauntered off in a casual manner, yawning and looking back the once to scratch his ear.
I just love these close encounters. I think I will call him Boris.

MALLARD MINOR There are very few things I can think of that are more cute than baby ducklings. This newly hatched duckling was busy looking for things to eat at Holbury Manor today. Unusually, he seemed to be the only offspring of Mummy duck who was watching over him.
