Revealed: ‘Fantastic and bold’ plans could see Southampton city centre become traffic-free
PEDESTRIAN ZONES FOR CITY?
This is a bold and interesting initiative by Southampton City Council.
As with everything, there will be some that severely criticise the proposals. You can imagine taxi drivers taking a view that is different to somebody who regularly cycles.
One thing that the recent lock down restrictions has taught us is that things like air quality, moving around at a slightly slower pace but in environments that are more human friendly have a real value.
Previously, I have argued that we should try temporary closures of traffic along places like Lyndhurst High Street.
I hope the experiment works. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I would certainly be more inclined to visit the city and spend more time walking & cycling around if people were given priority over cars in public spaces.
What do you think?
PLANS to turn Southampton city centre into a traffic-free area as part of a multi-million pound scheme have been unveiled.

SUPPORTING CYCLING It's interesting to see that some of the more visionary authorities are doing practical things to support cycling by putting in things like bespoke cycle lanes and secure cycle racks. Portsmouth City Council have also started introducing new tyre pump and multi-purpose tool kits, (like this). It will be interesting to see if…
