Rest In Peace Charles
There are some lovely tributes in the Lymington Times today about the legendary former editor, Charles Curry.
It’s clear that he was a truly eccentric character and much loved by many.
I never met him face to face but over the years he used to call me out of the blue and a long discussion would ensue.
When the Editor of a newspaper calls you, it makes you feel uneasy because it suggests that he is working on an important story.
I was always a bit guarded when he first called me but started to relax as the conversation developed.
Most of the time, I wasn’t able to determine what the central purpose of his call was.
Still today, I am not sure if he was engaged in a “fishing exercise”, just lightly touching on some subjects that I might offer a distinct view on, or perhaps it was his way of engaging with different players in the community to get a rounded view.
He had a good sense of humour.
His political leanings were definitely conservative but we all have some faults.

It was a most remarkable day at Hampshire County Council today. As Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition group, I led the charge against the proposed closure of the Orchard Close Care Home, in Hayling Island.
