REDUCTION IN COUNCILLOR NUMBERS LEADS TO STRANGE BOUNDARIES

The Electoral Commission has published a report detailing recommendations following the decision to reduce the number of Councillors from 60 to 48 on New Forest District Council.

This is a piece of work that I initiated some years ago. I always felt that there were simply more Councillors than really necessary and I am pleased that the Conservative group and now the Boundary Commission agreed with my view!

The good part is that the Council should operate a little more effectively with some significant savings on Councillor allowances and travelling expenses.

The "not so good" part is that in order to make all the wards of roughly equal size, the Boundary Commission have decided to change the wards in such a way that they don't always make a great deal of sense in terms of community identity.

For the purposes of District Council representation, residents in Eling will find that they have been taken out of Totton and installed in a new ward to be titled "Marchwood and Eling", represented by two Councillors.

Both Councillor Caroline Rackham and myself objected to moving Eling in with Marchwood for District Council representation purposes, but the Boundary Commission have decided to do it anyway, advising that this was the only way to make the numbers fit.

The next elections for the District Council are not due to take place for a couple of years.

WELL DONE TEAM TOTTON. Really good to see Team Totton getting recognition for the work they do from the New Forest National Park Authority and other forest organisations. It is hard to imagine what Totton would be like without them now. If only we can find some effective way of reducing the amount of litter…

CONVERTING CONVERTORS The criminal gang that are removing catalytic convertors are busy in Totton once again. I have had a number of reports of people finding that their car has been targeted. It seems it only takes them two or three minutes and they are away. I rather doubt that the police will catch them…

Another great example of community initiatives undertaken by local people. Forest organisations would like to thank Dominiks Wildlife Fund. ‘Drop in Beach Cleans’ were the creation of Dominik Reynolds, a Totton resident, at the young age of 17 years. The idea came to him following many messages and comments he had received following the 3rd…

Totton and Eling Town Council – Totton & Eling

SOMETHING POSITIVE The main feedback from the few members of the public that turned up to the Town Council meeting in Totton tonight was rather fierce criticism of the authority’s website. I think that the website is the “shop window” of an organisation and it should be very easy to navigate and find things like…
