Real crisis of confidence in the way the police force is overseen by the Police & Crime Commissioner – Video
In Hampshire, there is a real crisis of confidence in the way the police force is overseen by the Police & Crime Commissioner.
Crime rates are rising. Police are being asked to do more and more, with ever less resources.
The Police & Crime Commissioner is regarded by many as being out of touch and having the wrong priorities. One of the main reasons behind replacing the Police Authority (of elected Councillors) with a Police and Crime Commissioner was to save money.
However, the cost of running his office has far exceeded the original Police Authority arrangement, that worked well.
There was widespread dismay when he tried recruiting a former Tory MP as his deputy (without a selection process) at a salary of £78,000 a year).
However, the arrangement fell apart when they had a falling out within days of the appointment.
