POPPY TOTTON

I am grateful to Tim Cooper for sending me this photograph of poppies at the entrance to Totton.

I admit to being completely ignorant as to whether these were planted (via seeds), or the result of soil disturbance, or simply lack of mowing… but hopefully we can all agree it makes a splendid sight!.

Like many wild flower seeds, those of poppies can survive in the seed bank for decades and will germinate when the soil is disturbed. This is probably what happened here.
Incidentally, take a look at the junction between A35 and A326. The verges are covered in wild flowers. Please ensure that the Council does not mow these. Remember, it is Plantlife’s no mow May.

CLIMATE CHANGE EMERGENCY I know a lot of people are very concerned about climate change and what local politicians are doing about it. To be entirely honest, the situation in Hampshire is a bit mixed. Some politicians understand the seriousness of the problem and are acting upon it, whilst others are making the right noises,…

MY WEATHER WARNING I don't normally issue personal weather warnings, but I just spotted this anvil shaped cloud approaching Totton. An anvil cloud is made of ice particles; these frozen particles form in the highest levels of thunderstorms or cumulonimbus clouds. The cool shape that you see with the flat top is due to rising…

RAILWAY QUESTION It's possible that if you live in Totton, Marchwood or further down the Waterside, you may get a call from a survey company asking if you would use a passenger service down the Waterside line. Two important factors are frequency of service and cost. It looks most likely that it will be a…

TOTTON CAR PARKING CHARGES Well that's it… the long running agreement that lasted over two decades, providing free car parking in Council run car parks in Totton Town Centre seems to be no more. BAT ALERT I have had contact from a member of Hampshire Bat Care group who informs me that there seems to be bats roosting in the former Testwood Club building, Salisbury Road, Totton. The building has been purchased by New Forest District Council who, I understand, plan to demolish the building and develop housing on…
