PARKING CHARGES ARE BACK

From 1st June, the Conservatives are re-introducing car parking charges in almost all New Forest District Council owned car parks.

They suspended them during the lockdown period, partly because of concerns about the spread of the virus operating parking machines and handling money.

The loss of income has serious consequences and has not been covered by government help.

In Totton things aren't so straightforward. They will be reinstating charges in some car parks, such as Rumbridge Street, Winsor Road and the High Street, but not in Totton town centre because the Town Council pays the District Council, in order to retain free car parking for the benefit of local businesses.

There is a behind the scenes review going on about the whole issue of car parking in Totton in order to manage them better. This is unrelated to the decision announced today (which I wasn't consulted upon).

As I have said many times, I think it is big mistake to continue charging £5 a day for cars to park in Rumbridge Street car park. It means the car park is barely used (except for those with clocks or permits). It just means the bays are empty whilst cars are parked on nearby side roads.

WHERE COMMUNITY REALLY MATTERS There are some great things going on in Totton & Marchwood, turbo-charged by volunteers who organise all sorts of things that build a community and enhance the quality of life for everyone. I am always a believer in looking outside the area for a bit of inspiration and so am grateful…

AUGUST PLAN FOR LEISURE CENTRES A lot of people have asked me about the re-opening of the five District Council Leisure Centres. They have all been mothballed whilst the Coronavirus crisis has restricted our normal lives. However, the District Council are planning to re-open them on a phased basis, with new social distancing and hygiene…

BOUNDARY REVIEW OF DISTRICT COUNCIL SEATS I have made a personal submission to the Boundary Commission's Consultation, making the point that Eling and Marchwood are two entirely different settlements, with Eling being much more connected to Totton. It would seem strange, lumping the two communities together, even if it means Councillors representing the same number…

Four New Forest towns named on Aldi’s development hit-list

ALDI FOR TOTTON? Well done to one of our local newspapers for spotting Aldi has Totton on the list for potential development sites. I have to say, I am not at all sure where it could be located. Eling wharf was once identified as a potential supermarket site, but now that it's owned by Associated…

The proposed reduction in the numbers of Councillors on New Forest District Council will result in a new “Marchwood & Eling” ward (represented by two Councillors). We will also lose “Totton East” as the Testwood area is moved into expanded other Totton wards. I don’t know how residents in Eling… More
