Orange Tips for Totton!
Would you like to be part of a growing group of people who are helping wildlife just by keeping a few plants in their garden? If every garden in Totton had just a few extra plants in a quiet corner we could have these lovely butterflies in much greater numbers.

I’ve always been a bit of butterfly fan and the Orange Tip is an old favourite. They can live their whole life out on Jack by the Hedge, a plant that grows well in Totton and can provide food for adult butterfies and caterpillars of this pretty little creature. Keep a patch in dappled sunlight and it can provide nectar for adults who then lay their bright yellow eggs on the leaves. The caterpillars camouflage themselves as the green seed pods of the plant and eventually change colour to match as the seed pods turn brown.

It would only take a clump or two of this cheery green plant or even it’s cousin Honesty which they also enjoy, and we could have a host of butterflies! Can you keep a clump in a corner somewhere? It’s an enthusiastic plant but easy to pull up if it gets over zealous! If you need seed then let me know and I will be able to supply in a month or so.

CLIMATE CHANGE EMERGENCY I know a lot of people are very concerned about climate change and what local politicians are doing about it. To be entirely honest, the situation in Hampshire is a bit mixed. Some politicians understand the seriousness of the problem and are acting upon it, whilst others are making the right noises,…

MY WEATHER WARNING I don't normally issue personal weather warnings, but I just spotted this anvil shaped cloud approaching Totton. An anvil cloud is made of ice particles; these frozen particles form in the highest levels of thunderstorms or cumulonimbus clouds. The cool shape that you see with the flat top is due to rising…

RAILWAY QUESTION It's possible that if you live in Totton, Marchwood or further down the Waterside, you may get a call from a survey company asking if you would use a passenger service down the Waterside line. Two important factors are frequency of service and cost. It looks most likely that it will be a…

BAT ALERT I have had contact from a member of Hampshire Bat Care group who informs me that there seems to be bats roosting in the former Testwood Club building, Salisbury Road, Totton. The building has been purchased by New Forest District Council who, I understand, plan to demolish the building and develop housing on…
