NO ANSWER AT THE TOP
There is an assumption about those that go into politics that the big ambition is to get as far up the greasy pole as it is possible to get. In other words "success" is defined by becoming a Government Minister.
I have always been rather doubtful of this. Ministerial jobs seem rather short lived and you find yourself in the firing line whenever anything goes wrong, whether or not you had much to do with the issue.
I never had the necessary talent to get to Westminster let alone a job in Government, but I am not really sorry about that.
If I am asked a question, I place a high value on trying to answer it honestly. I have never been too bothered whether it is the answer the questioner wants to hear. The truth is much more important than misleading or sugar coating things.
One of the common qualities that Government Ministers seem to share is that they are masters at evading answering questions in a straightforward way. I listened to an interview this morning and I found it profoundly depressing. The Minister was asked the same question, in about four or five ways, but each time, he found ways not to answer it.
Ministers must receive training by "experts" on evading questions, or maybe they don't and are just very clever people who understand that they will cause problems for their colleagues if they are candid.
All will be revealed in a few years time when they have left office and want to sell you their book!
My reaction to this behaviour is that I will stop listening to such interviews, because I am learning nothing… and I certainly won't be buying their book!

BUTTERFLY COUNT The Annual Butterfly Count received a lot of publicity this year, which is good, along with the number of people who took part in the exercise. The overall headline seems to be a reduction in most species of butterflies but (as always) the detail is much more important. Having everybody count at one…
FERAL BIRDS There has been a large family of Feral pigeons that live in and around the bridges at Redbridge for as long as I can remember. They often like to sunbathe on the roof of nearby buildings. Interbreeding means that there are also quite a lot of interesting colour variations.
MOST AUTHORITARIAN GOVERNMENT EVER? I align myself with the growing number of MP's that are calling for Parliament to have much more of a say before more restrictions are being imposed upon us by Boris and Cummings. If it seems like some of the recent decisions are "off the wall", it is what happens when…
NEW FOREST SHOULD BE RUN BY NEW FOREST RESIDENTS There has been a very strong reaction to the news that Government and local Conservative Councillors are talking up plans for a new "Super Council" to replace New Forest District Council. It's not clear yet whether the government plans will lead to an enhanced Hampshire County…
Thank you to the Volunteers at Ordnance Survey for painting the Hangar Farm building. I met with Minstead Trust and other Councillors last week to discuss the future of the building and service it provides for the community. There is a real joint determination to keep it open, although it is currently making almost no…
