NEW FOREST CAR PARKS CLOSED

Forestry England, (formerly the Forestry Commission) have taken the decision to close all car parks that they manage in the New Forest, (this is the majority of them).

The difficult decision was made over the weekend when it was apparent people were gathering in large numbers in close proximity, very likely spreading the Coronavirus more widely.

There were huge numbers of people out in the forest, many of them who were visiting from outside the district.

The government, guided by health experts, have been warning people to socially isolate or distance themselves. If this isn't happening, there will be ever more extreme measures taken.

It seems entirely natural for people to want to get out into the New Forest and get some fresh air and exercise, but this cannot be done safely with car parks and other facilities open. It may cause some problems if people still choose to go out and park on roads and verges near the car parks, but this is seen as less of a hazard than keeping the car parks open.

I support the decision. I realise that it will upset a great many people, especially those that use the car parks regularly for dog walking etc. However, when thousands of lives are at stake, I hope people will think very carefully about changing their normal behaviour and accepting that we have to make sacrifices for a few weeks or months.
