Manifesto Pledge Number 5
It’s that time of the week when I can reveal the New Forest Liberal Democrat pledge Number 5, for the forthcoming District Council elections next May.
This is additional to our ideas on freezing council tax, using the stored Art works, reducing the numbers of Councillors and providing a discount bus travel scheme for younger people.
We propose to initiate and support a Community Interest Company that repairs broken items.
There are already a few schemes operating elsewhere in the country.
There is a successful project in Southampton and a Bike repair scheme in Burley.
However, a visit to any Household Waste Recycling Centre will show that we are a very wasteful society and throw lots of things away, often for the want of a quick repair.
Recycling is good but not nearly so good as extending the life of products.
We think that we could create jobs, help improve people’s skills and generally provide a useful facility that local people would use.

It was a most remarkable day at Hampshire County Council today. As Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition group, I led the charge against the proposed closure of the Orchard Close Care Home, in Hayling Island.
