KEEPING THE FOCUS

I have been around long enough and had the experience of working in different organisations to know that it can be very hard to keep a consistent focus on what's really important.

The Liberal Democrat part of the Town Council pushed really hard to get the Conservative part of the Town Council to accept that tackling climate change is an "emergency". However, it simply isn't enough for them to support the motion. It is what you do that really matters.

Concepts like global warming, fires in Australia and California, or even unprecedented flooding events in the UK can seem a long way from Totton. However, if climate change scientists are right, Totton will be quickly impacted by any increase in sea levels. Quite apart from contributing to the global effort to reduce carbon emissions, we really do have "skin in the game" when you realise just how vulnerable we are to flooding in places like Eling, Rushington, Central Totton, Testwood and Calmore.

The Town Council runs a lot of things and there are always new projects that members want to see done. However, once you accept climate change is the priority, you have to agree an action plan and everything else has to fit around all the measures we need to put in place.

At a meeting of the Town Council last night, I asked a committee Chairman if he would ensure that the topic is included on every future agenda, so that we can monitor progress and make sure the resources are in place for any actions agreed as necessary.

It sometimes feels like I am trying to push a gloopy substance up a hill and my contributions are as welcome as a scorpion in a lucky dip, but I keep pressing the matter.

What is an ‘Australian-style’ deal? | UK in a changing Europe

JUST SO YOU KNOW… The Conservatives have failed to negotiate a deal with the EU over trade, having taken us out of the European Union. The Transition period ends at the end of this year. Clearly, the “Oven Ready Deal” hasn’t materialised. As expected, the Conservatives are blaming everything on… More What is an ‘Australian-style’…

BIRD OF THE MEADOW…

BIRD OF THE MEADOW I am quite pleased with this shot of a Meadow Pipit, taken today at Lepe Countryside Park. My idea was to get a shot of a bird amongst the red samphire.

The Power of the Press?

FOREST PRESSURES An interesting article from John Ward, of “New Forest Friends”, writing about traffic pressure he recently witnessed. I suppose it is only possible to write an article like this if you witnessed it whilst riding a bike. If you had travelled by car you would be seen as contributing… More The Power of…

ACORN PLANTER…

ACORN PLANTER I was lucky enough to spot one of these beautiful birds today. It’s not the best quality shot because it was taken quickly through a bedroom window. It’s a Jay. One of my favourites. My neighbour has a well established oak tree. This is the sort bonus you get by having that in…
