KEEP ON ZOOMING

We had a long meeting of the Totton & Eling Town Council tonight, held on Zoom and included an agenda item "about" Zoom.

The Conservative Chairman wanted to hold the next Town Council meeting in person at the West Totton Centre. However, I proposed and it was eventually unanimously agreed that the next Council meeting (due in September) will again be held using zoom.

All of the authorities I am involved with are using technology to meet, mostly very successfully. Councillors are adapting to it. Meetings are not generally much longer than they used to be. Everyone tends to participate about as much as they would have done anyway.

I made a further proposal that the Council meetings should be recorded. This should be helpful to the public who can listen to the debates. Interestingly, a journalist present broke standing orders and commented during the meeting that she found recording the meetings very useful.

We are moving towards a "new" normal. I am keen that this involves a greater degree of openness and transparency, so that the public can see for themselves how decisions are arrived at.

BUSINESS DOMINATED WATERSIDE In my nightmares, I have a vision of Totton and the Waterside being completely dominated by business interests, at cost to the environment and the people that live here. We already have a very substantial amount of commerce and industry here, including a lot of large facilities that serve the nearby city…

Secure cycle parking is vital to getting more people on bikes

NEEDED IN TOTTON I very much agree with the need to provide secure cycle parking facilities. In particular, Totton train station has one of the worst records in the UK for cycle thefts. It's a huge barrier to anyone thinking of leaving an expensive bike there, whilst taking the train. On the planned list of…

Illegally parked? New council powers can see your car towed, with a £150 retrieval fee

TOW AWAY POWERS? The thousands of people that descended on Bournemouth Beach this summer, with many motorists illegally parking nearby, has prompted the local authority there to adopt special powers to tow away cars. This new power is being trialled. I will be watching this with interest. I get really frustrated by a small number…
