An important clarification from the Police Federation.

Re-deploying officers in London will have an impact on forces across the country, including Hampshire (where the conservatives are again cutting the police numbers, this year by a further 110 officers and over 50 support staff.)

This from the party that often describes itself as “the law and order party”.

Let’s get the facts straight!

Following the tragic events in London, you will have seen the media, politicians and some senior police bosses saying that there are ‘extra’ police officers on the streets.

This is not a unique statement just for London, it is often said in other parts of the country. This suggests we have large numbers of police officers in storerooms waiting to be deployed in addition to the officers we already have, these are those ‘extra’ officers!

This is not the case and it’s important you know the facts.

When politicians, bosses or the media claim there are extra officers being deployed to the streets this means that the officers we already have will have their rest days cancelled, they will be redeployed from other duties or they will be forced to work extra hours.

In times of crisis police officers accept this will happen, they want to do their best but with record low numbers of officers available this is simply not sustainable. Something has to give.

So to clarify – these officers are not extra, they are not additional. This is the reality!
