Goodbye Buses

Buses - Not in service
Not in service
Letter to The Echo, today :

Dear Sir,

I can understand the upset caused by the decision of a bus company to cease a local service.

It’s a reminder that these companies exist primarily to make profits and that providing a public service is very much a secondary consideration.
This has been the case ever since Margaret Thatcher (who famously announced that anyone who uses buses has failed at life), de-regulated buses with the idea that competition would provide us with lots of services at great, low, prices.

I’m afraid that it is still the Tories who are presiding over the gradual dismantling of public services.

Central government has cut back on funds to local government to the extent that your local Council is no longer likely to subsidise unprofitable bus services.

The loss of the one service in Southampton will be dwarfed by the impact across the whole of Hampshire if the proposed Tory cuts to all bus subsidies goes ahead at Hampshire County Council.

So we have a government that claims it is serious about cutting traffic emissions and improving air quality and congestion, whilst forcing more and more of us into cars.

Furthermore, what use a bus pass if there are no buses?

Yours Sincerely,

Councillor David Harrison
Leader, New Forest District Council Liberal Democrats
