The newly elected Councillors quite rightly questioned why male Councillors were referred to as “Councillor XX”, whilst, if you happened to be female it was “Councillor Miss XX”, or Councillor Mrs XX”.
Totton Town Council agreed tonight to drop the “Mrs, Ms and Mrs” and refer to all Council members in the same way as “Councillor”.
Standing Orders are also going to be changed so that references to “he” (as though all Council members are male), will now be changed to “they”.
To many, it may seem trivial, but I think we really do need to move on from times when the men ran everything, occupied all the positions of authority and used terminology and documents that reinforced it.
Amusingly, the next item on the agenda at the Policy and Resources Committee tonight was an item on “The Men’s Shed”.
