FLOATING LEAF LITTER

I took this shot of fallen leaves, floating down the river Blackwater and under Rumbridge at Totton.

It is small wonder that the archways underneath the bridge have got silted up over the years.

At one time, the Environment Agency used to regularly dredge out material from the river in order to maintain strong flows, but they haven't done this for some years.

I have raised with them the question of whether not doing so adds to the risk of nearby flooding. The response I got was that the river is monitored regularly, but that's about it.

The cut backs to the Environment Agency are another example of things that go largely unnoticed, that is until a major incident happens (perhaps prompted by climate change) and then everybody realises that the savings government made were a false economy.

Major transport plan for Hampshire roads

TRANSPORT PLANS There is a big difference between having a plan to do something and actually carrying it out. In terms of the level crossing in the middle of Totton, I am really pleased that the possibility of a bridge is being looked at. This because increased rail traffic… definitely more freight but perhaps also…

TOTTON MENTIONED IN BUDGET Well, Well, Well…. Totton (& Hythe) get a specific mention in the Budget report read out by the Chancellor of the Exchequer! This is the first time in history that I am aware of our town getting a specific mention. It's all because the Conservatives are now on board with the…

TORY CHRISTMAS PRESENT Another depressing meeting of the Totton & Eling Town Council. Tonight, despite the protests of myself and other Liberal Democrat Councillors, the Conservatives have colluded in pushing through car parking charges in town centre car parks, with a £10 overstay fee for anyone guilty of parking too long. It's a combination of…

MARKET AT THE PUB Let's overlook the headline, suggesting that Totton is in Southampton. Welcome publicity for a welcome local initiative.
