District Council’s “B & B” Bill
I was shocked to find out that the Tory run New Forest District Council is now spending annually up to £700,000 of taxpayer’s money on putting up people in temporary housing, such as Bed & Breakfast accommodation in Travelodge Hotels.
I don’t know how things have been allowed to quite this bad.
The Tory “Right To Buy” policy has had a very significant impact.
The Council has lost half its’ Council housing stock in the last 20 years and Council homes for rent are still being lost as people exercise their right to buy.
More shocking still, is finding out that some people on the waiting list are people who bought their council home at a heavily discounted price, only to get into debt by living above their means and are now on the council housing waiting list again.
With about 3000 people on the waiting list for a council home and only about 300 properties becoming available each year, it seems a ten year wait will become the average for people wanting a council house in the New Forest District.
Faced with an ever lengthening waiting list, the District Council are very likely to change the allocations policy which decides who and when people qualify for housing.
It is plainly ridiculous that almost everybody on the list is described as “Priority”.
I think it creates false hope to thousands of people who think that a council property will become available for them in the near future.
I will be campaigning for the forthcoming elections on a pledge to try and put an end to the “Right to buy”, to stop people from abusing the system, to start building more council homes for rent and truly affordable homes for young people to live in.

I must admit to a slight sinking feeling whenever the thick file of papers known as the Agenda and reports for the next District Council planning committee fall on my doormat.
The District Council formally decided to adopt new powers that will enable them to levy fines at the registered owners of vehicles, if any litter is thrown out, whether by the driver or a passenger.
