District Council should have Design Awards
I have asked New Forest District Council Planners to consider an award scheme for examples of good building design in the District.
I have been very impressed by a scheme that the New Forest National Park runs, recognising examples of good design for both small and large developments.
It encourages good design that is in keeping with the New Forest and attracts a lot of good publicity as well as recognising the achievements of the architects involved.
At a meeting yesterday, I told fellow Councillors and Planning Chiefs that the District Council should follow suit. Everybody benefits from good design.
It’s also a way of tackling the perception that planners are always unreasonably obstructing people from building things.
Well designed buildings, large or small, sometimes inspire or at least lift and enhance the surrounding areas.
I hope they decide to follow up my suggestion and get a scheme going.
I will certainly plan to do so, if the Liberal Democrats gain control after the elections in May 2019.

It’s a very time for the conservative party and for democracy generally. With one New Forest Tory MP voting “Yes” to the Brexit deal and another voting “No”, they lose the ability to blame anyone else but themselves.
Despite possessing an “A” level in Economics and studying “Quantitative methods” on my way to becoming a Chartered Insurer, I still don’t fully understand statistics and sometimes have to listen to two friends who are economists and are prepared to patiently explain to me how something works, or how reliable a statistic actually is.
