BUSINESS DOMINATED WATERSIDE
In my nightmares, I have a vision of Totton and the Waterside being completely dominated by business interests, at cost to the environment and the people that live here.
We already have a very substantial amount of commerce and industry here, including a lot of large facilities that serve the nearby city of Southampton.
When looking at the future, I want Totton & The Waterside to remain a pleasant place to live, with space for nature. The danger is that, squeezed between the Southampton Water and the New Forest National Park, all sorts of undesirable development will be permitted with little to compensate for it.
The Fawley Waterside development has much to commend it, but it will have a negative impact north of the Dibden roundabout with nothing in place to mitigate the expected extra traffic congestion.
What further misery might arise when we see Marchwood Sea Mounting Centre developed for commercial use and Dibden Bay developed?
Against this background you might expect the Conservative District Council to be looking out for the interests of the people that live here and the environment. However, the reality is rather different.
In fact, what they have done is formed an informal consortium, completely dominated by business interests, which has already produced what they describe as a "Vision for the Waterside". They are proposing to adopt this as a formal high level document that will guide local policies.
This document is set to be rubber stamped at a virtual meeting of the District Council's Cabinet meeting tomorrow (Wednesday August 5th) and to be subsequently endorsed by the full Council.
This unelected and unaccountable consortium has a membership that comprises of Associated British Ports, Solent Gateway Ltd, Fawley Waterside Ltd, Exxon and Barker Mill Estates. Another major player is the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (primarily an organisation devoted to encouraging economic growth).
If you look at the Vision they have produced for our area there is a lot of emphasis on expanding business (surprise, surprise). Also, a lot of greenwash… mentions about the environment without anything specific.
The Liberal Democrats aren't at all anti-business, but we strongly believe that the needs of business and the profit motive should not be allowed to completely dominate. There needs to be balance, with quality of life for the residents and space for nature to be protected.

CLIMATE CHANGE EMERGENCY I know a lot of people are very concerned about climate change and what local politicians are doing about it. To be entirely honest, the situation in Hampshire is a bit mixed. Some politicians understand the seriousness of the problem and are acting upon it, whilst others are making the right noises,…
MY WEATHER WARNING I don't normally issue personal weather warnings, but I just spotted this anvil shaped cloud approaching Totton. An anvil cloud is made of ice particles; these frozen particles form in the highest levels of thunderstorms or cumulonimbus clouds. The cool shape that you see with the flat top is due to rising…
RAILWAY QUESTION It's possible that if you live in Totton, Marchwood or further down the Waterside, you may get a call from a survey company asking if you would use a passenger service down the Waterside line. Two important factors are frequency of service and cost. It looks most likely that it will be a…
TOTTON CAR PARKING CHARGES Well that's it… the long running agreement that lasted over two decades, providing free car parking in Council run car parks in Totton Town Centre seems to be no more. At a meeting of the Policy & Resources Committee of the Town Council tonight, I was amused to hear local Conservative…
BAT ALERT I have had contact from a member of Hampshire Bat Care group who informs me that there seems to be bats roosting in the former Testwood Club building, Salisbury Road, Totton. The building has been purchased by New Forest District Council who, I understand, plan to demolish the building and develop housing on…
