A Lidl request… If you don’t ask
A lot of residents have complained to me about the high parking fines that dished out by the private contractor employed by the owners of the car parks near the Lidl store in Commercial Road in Totton.
Even worse is that the system they employ, that recognises car number plates, operates on a 24/7 basis, so some people have found that by parking their car there in the evening and having a meal at the nearby Indian or Chinese restaurant can be a lot more expensive than they realised!
I cannot compel private operators to do what I want but I have approached them and asked if they would be prepared to allow “free parking” in the evenings, without the fear of penalties.
There really are no traffic management issues in the evenings and these car parks provide safe, well lit, easy access to local businesses that are open at those times.
Fining people £80 for no good cause is, in my view, profiteering and will put people off from coming into Totton.
Let’s see what they say. I made the point to them that they too benefit from successful business operating in the locality.

I have spoken at length to Councillor Neville Penman this morning. He was good enough to brief me on how the meeting went last night, supported by police officers, about crime and anti-social behaviour.
