Giant Polytunnel For A35 Totton Bypass?

Poly tunnel A35

The front page of the The Times today suggests that we may see a rather extreme solution to the air quality problems on the A35 into Southampton.

It’s known that pollution levels are dangerously high and that government must act to find a solution. Highways England is apparently considering building tents made from pollution absorbing materials to help nearby residents avoid breathing the toxic fumes.

It isn’t clear yet whether this applies to Totton bypass or Lyndhurst High Street, but both areas suffer from high emissions from vehicles.

There is already a trial barrier on the M62. The results from this are likely to inform a decision on whether we shall see a barrier or even a tunnel locally.
