David Harrison - County, District and Town Councillor
• Marchwood Quarry Worries

Another battle is looming, over HGV movements in the Marchwood area.
Local County Councillor, David Harrison, is opposing an application to extend quarry activity in the area for a further 12 years.

Quarry activity in Marchwood was supposed to have come to a halt earlier this year, as the time limited planning permission given in December 1995 came to an end. However, Marchwood Aggregates have put in an application to extend the activities for a further 12 years. The application is to be considered by the Regulatory Committee of Hampshire County Council on the 13th January.
Councillor Harrison has served notice of his opposition and intention to speak at the committee meeting.

Cllr. Harrison says “Local people are really upset by the prospect of more quarry activity for a further 12 years. The applicants admit that there may be as much as 100,000 tonnes of material still to recover from the site. It means a continuing 104 HGV movements a day. It was once a tranquil area. Herons used to nest in the nearby woodland, but not for the last four years. The residents of Totton and Marchwood are entitled to some respite from continual increases in HGV traffic in the area.”

Totton & Eling Town Council are amongst other formal objectors to the proposal, expressing concern about the HGV movements and environmental impacts.

Does anybody know what is happening with the temporary lakes? I often drive by the one opposite the old incinerator and wonder if the area will ever be opened up to the public.
Why doesnt Marchwood parish council get permission for it to become an area for families to go, or even open them up to local fishermen? I guess this wont be happening in my lifetime, but i seriously think that Marchwood council needs to start waking up and make the area a better place to live.
Just lately all we hear about is HGVs, yes i agree they can be a nightmare but start thinking about other things and quit moaning about them.

Dear Mr Harrison
As a local small landscaping and civil works business based in Marchwood I would like to say some words of support for the continuing of gravel extraction near Marchwood,
1 The material extracted is of very good quality for use both in concrete and landscaping works and stopping extraction would be a great loss to the local trade.
2 If a similar material had to be bought in from other sites it would cost more locally and there would be just as many HGVs to ship it in as ship it out.
3 As a resident of Marchwood I cannot see any way that more extraction will affect this village apart from creating some jobs.
4 I feel the same as anyone else about HGVs but if we have to have them operating I would far rather see local ones on the road with local drivers and operators who I know from experiance are more sensitive to local concerns than hauliers from outside our district
5 Herons still do nest in the area along with a fantastic amount of other birdlife attracted to the temporary lakes the site has created, but that is another issue I will be writing to you about shortly
king regards
